GitLab unveils AI-driven development architecture

GitLab unveiled components of a new software development architecture at its June Transcend event, including source control for machine-scale concurrency and GitLab Orbit as a context graph spanning the software lifecycle. The announcement followed its May publication, 'Act 2,' which argued that AI is reducing the cost and time of software production, enabling machines to build software under human direction. Anthropic’s August AI-Native SDLC Playbook echoed this sentiment, stating that 'code is no longer the bottleneck.' Over eight months, GitLab, alongside Stripe, Spotify, and Amplitude, has observed a shift in software development constraints from code production to trust, emphasizing context, verification, governance, and evidence. Historical software engineering practices, rooted in code scarcity, are being reevaluated as AI accelerates implementation.
