New course teaches how to combine cloud and local AI for coding

JetBrains partnered with DeepLearning.AI to release a free course titled 'AI Coding Workflows: Hybrid to Local'. The course demonstrates approaches for combining different AI models, including using more powerful models for planning while cheaper or local models handle routine tasks. Through PyCharm with its AI Chat feature, developers learn to implement solutions like Claude Code subagents, OpenRouter inference routing, and local models Gemma 4 12B or Qwen 3.5 27B. The course emphasizes collecting metrics to evaluate performance and cost tradeoffs between different AI approaches.
