Edge Link: Bridging the Gap Between Legacy Industrial Tech and Modern IoT
Mukesh Sankhla's Edge Link is a DIY device designed to retrofit older industrial equipment into modern systems without risky modifications. The compact device mounts on a standard DIN rail within an electrical cabinet and communicates with legacy machines via protocols like Modbus and RS-485. It functions as an IoT gateway, logging data and enabling remote monitoring through MQTT messages and a Unified Namespace (UNS) structure. Equipped with an Arduino® UNO Q board, Edge Link can run machine learning models for predictive maintenance, making decisions locally without requiring external network access. Sankhla also developed a PLC Simulator featuring a Siemens S7-300 PLC digital twin for testing. This solution integrates seamlessly with existing dashboards and cloud platforms, offering a cost-effective way to enhance legacy systems.
