GitHub shifts focus to Azure after Actions outage

On August 6, GitHub Actions experienced a prolonged outage, impacting customer productivity and trust. The incident highlighted capacity issues tied to the service’s reliance on data center infrastructure. GitHub is accelerating its migration of GitHub Actions to Azure, aiming for better scalability and resilience. In July, progress was made in reducing dependency on shared infrastructure, with over half of monolith read traffic running in Azure Central US and 29% of repositories replicated there. Dedicated authentication and repository services have also alleviated pressure on shared paths. The stability validation process introduced after May’s incident now guides major traffic expansions, minimizing customer risk.
