Rust Foundation Announces First Maintainers in Residence Program

The Rust Foundation has announced its first cohort of Maintainers in Residence, funding six contributors to work on critical Rust ecosystem projects. The program, established through RFC 3931, provides financial support ranging from 1 to 5 days per week of maintenance work. Initial funded maintainers include Gen Li (rustup), Chris Denton, Alejandra González, León Liehr, Jason Newcomb, and Jonas Böttiger. Funding comes from the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund with contributions from Google, AWS, OpenAI, and individual sponsors. The selection prioritized teams that were both underfunded and high-impact, including rustdoc, cargo, and the compiler. The Foundation notes this is just the first round of funding and plans to support more maintainers in the future.
